Viaplay Aims to Accelerate Growth in UK with Acquisition of Premier Sports

Streaming platform Viaplay takes over British sports channel Premier Sports. The acquisition aims to accelerate growth ahead of Viaplay’s UK launch this fall.

Premier Sports has 222,000 paid subscribers in the UK and Ireland. The payment channel recorded a turnover of 26.4 million pounds last year or 31 million euros.

The media group also announced that its second-quarter turnover grew by 18 percent to 3.7 billion Swedish kronor. Net profit more than doubled to 175 million kronor. “We have achieved another quarter that is well in line with our strategy and goals. Viaplay’s strong performance in Scandinavia was complemented by further growth in its international business,” the company said.

Viaplay entered the Dutch market at the beginning of this year. The streaming service bought, among other things, the broadcasting rights of Formula 1, which was previously broadcast via Ziggo.

In addition, earlier this week, it was announced that Viaplay would broadcast a series about the fireworks disaster in Enschede. This drama series will be called ROOMBEEK and can be seen on the streaming service from the autumn of 2023.
