The Polling Stations on the East Coast of the US are Open Tuesday Morning Local Time

The polling stations on the East Coast of the US are open Tuesday morning local time. Voters can already vote in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine, and Virginia. Election day in the United States has really begun with that.

The doors of the US polling stations open at different times during the day, as the US has multiple time zones. The first polling stations open in the east, the last in Alaska, in the far west.

Americans determine whether Democratic candidate Joe Biden or Republican Donald Trump becomes the next president of the United States.

According to opinion polls, Biden is ahead of Trump. But incumbent President Trump dismisses the polls as “fake news” and points out that he also started the race as an outsider in 2016.

It is unclear whether there will be a winner on election night. That is by no means certain, given the large number of votes cast by post—a record number as a result of the corona pandemic.

There are also parliamentary elections on Tuesday. This year, all 435 members of the House of Representatives will be re-elected.

In addition, a third of the Senate seats are at stake. Currently, Democrats hold the majority in the House of Representatives (235 out of 435 seats) but a minority in the Senate (45 out of 100 seats).
