Switzerland Takes Over EU Sanctions Against Russia

Switzerland takes over EU sanctions against Russia. That means, among other things, that assets of Russian companies and individuals, including President Vladimir Putin, are blocked because of the invasion of Ukraine.
The decision is striking because the country generally adopts a neutral stance. President Ignazio Cassis speaks of a “unique and difficult” step that required careful thought.
The country wants to show its solidarity with Ukraine by taking over two sanctions packages.
Cassis said on Sunday that it is “very likely” that the Swiss would follow the European Union’s lead. In addition to imposing sanctions, the government in Bern has also ordered the delivery of relief supplies to Poland, where many Ukrainian residents have fled.
