Record Number of Americans Buy Health Insurance Through Obamacare

Since November, a record 14.5 million Americans have taken out health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, reports The Washington Post. According to the American newspaper, that is 2 million more than the previous record.

The number can still rise. Health insurance policies are offered online on so-called marketplaces, where people can compare policies and immediately take out insurance. This was possible until mid-January via the federal government’s marketplace. This year’s deadline hasn’t passed for state and district marketplaces.

President Joe Biden says he is proud of “the highest numbers ever”. These results are from measures he took last year to reduce costs and improve access to care. During his election campaign, the Democrats promised to make healthcare more accessible and affordable. However, his Republican predecessor Donald Trump wanted to get rid of Obamacare and had stripped the system.

Obamacare is named after former President Barack Obama. He led the United States from 2009 to 2017, before Trump became president. Biden was vice president under Obama. The Affordable Care Act has ensured that people with existing health problems can also take out insurance. Care allowances are also offered.
