Opposition Leader Navalny Gets 9 Years In Prison for Embezzlement

A court has sentenced Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny to nine years in prison for embezzling money from his own organizations.

According to the court, he has pushed back millions of euros from donors. As a result, prosecutors had demanded 13 years in prison against him.

The 45-year-old opposition leader has been incarcerated for more than a year over controversial charges dating back nearly a decade and is being accused of an increasing number of offences.

The new trial was held in the penal colony east of Moscow, where he is now detained. Navalny says it is a political process, and he has done nothing wrong.
