Merkel Wants More European Cooperation Against Corona

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for closer cooperation within the EU on the corona pandemic.
She did so on Thursday in a government statement because of Germany’s upcoming EU presidency.
“No country can go through this crisis in isolation and alone,” she said. “Solidarity and cohesion in Europe have never been more critical than today.
The pandemic has revealed how fragile the European project still is. The first reflexes, including ours, were rather national and not European.”
Merkel announced that Germany would be fully committed to a European climate law during the presidency.
Merkel wants Africa as the centre of gravity in the EU’s foreign policy because the states there are suffering from the corona crisis. Another focus will be on relations with China.
Germany will chair the EU in the second half of the year. There will be an EU summit on the recovery plan and a European post-corona relief fund on Friday.
