EU Parliament Backs Unseen Heavy Response to Russian Invasion
The European Parliament backs “an unprecedented European and international response, including new and severe sanctions”, to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“Severe sanctions should make it clear that we hold the Kremlin responsible,” the parliament’s chairman and group leaders said in a joint statement. They are organizing an extra plenary meeting on the situation on March 1, they announce.
President Roberta Metsola had summoned the parliament leaders after the invasion of Ukraine. In the statement, they condemned the invasion “in the strongest possible terms.”
“The attack is against our model of a democratic society and cannot go unanswered.” They also express their support for the people of Ukraine.
