Central America is Starving From the Corona Crisis and Hurricanes

The number of people starving in Central America has quadrupled in the past two years. So says the United Nations World Food Program.
In addition to the economic crisis caused by the corona pandemic, the region also suffered two devastating hurricanes. More and more people are, therefore, choosing to leave their country. “If there is only enough food for the children, they will get everything. Even if we have nothing because of that.”
Central America is one of the poorest regions in the world. Economic malaise and a spiral of violence are pushing the population to the limit. In recent years, the situation has only gotten worse. The corona pandemic has intensified the economic crisis, and many people barely have anything to eat.
The corona measures mainly affect those who work in the informal economy. Because they are not allowed outside, they have no work anymore. And so there is no more food on the table.
A new study by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) shows that the number of people going hungry in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua has almost quadrupled in the past two years: some 8 million Central Americans, compared to 2. 2 million in 2018.
